Job Summary

We are seeking a Certified Professional Coder III to join our Bariatrics, General Surgery, and Breast Specialty team. This role involves ensuring the accurate and compliant assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes for surgeries and treatments related to bariatrics, general surgery, and breast care. You will work closely with physicians and clinical teams to ensure that all coding follows CMS, NCQA, and third-party payer regulations, maximizing reimbursement and maintaining billing accuracy.

In addition to coding, you will provide ongoing education and support to the physicians and clinical staff on proper coding practices. This position requires someone who is highly organized, able to work independently, and effective in communicating with a variety of healthcare professionals to improve clinical documentation and coding compliance.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Required: High School diploma or GED
  • Preferred: Certification or additional training in medical coding, particularly in bariatrics, general surgery, or breast surgery coding

Experience:

  • Required: Minimum of four years of healthcare experience, with at least three years of professional coding experience in bariatrics, general surgery, or breast care
  • Preferred: Two years of medical terminology experience and three years of customer service experience in a clinical setting

Licensure/Certification:

  • Required: CPC, CCS-P, COC, RHIA, CMC, or RHIT certification

Skills & Requirements:

  • Proficiency in CPT, ICD-9, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding systems with a focus on bariatric, general surgery, and breast care procedures
  • Experience with EPIC Resolute Billing preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and handle self-audits
  • Ability to educate and provide feedback to physicians and staff on correct coding practices
  • Expertise in applying, interpreting, and training on coding classifications systems and documentation guidelines related to bariatrics, general surgery, and breast care
  • Familiarity with coding audits, denials, and front-end education

Key Responsibilities

Coding & Documentation:

  • Review and code bariatric, general surgery, and breast surgery procedures with minimal supervision, ensuring correct coding and sequencing of diagnoses and procedures
  • Query providers for clarification on incomplete or ambiguous documentation and follow up to ensure timely resolution
  • Provide continuous education and feedback to surgeons and clinical staff regarding ICD-10 coding and documentation best practices for bariatrics, general surgery, and breast care

Process Management:

  • Keep up-to-date with coding, compliance, and reimbursement procedures specific to bariatrics, general surgery, and breast specialties by reviewing payer policy updates, coding manuals, and RCS guidelines
  • Assist with coding inquiries from billing, collections, and administrative staff, ensuring that accurate codes are applied for appropriate reimbursement
  • Help physicians interpret complex coding and documentation guidelines to ensure correct billing for bariatric, general surgery, and breast procedures

Error Auditing & Education:

  • Shift from a back-end coding process to a front-end educational approach by monitoring errors, edits, and denials related to bariatric, general surgery, and breast procedures
  • Provide on-site education to clinicians and surgeons, ensuring they understand common coding errors and offering solutions to improve documentation and coding practices
  • Provide regular reports on coding discrepancies and missed opportunities, collaborating with clinical teams to implement corrective actions
  • Work with physicians to streamline coding options in EMR systems, ensuring accurate and efficient use of available fields for better coding accuracy
