General Summary
The Echocardiography Technician at Novant Health Hilton Head Heart plays a critical role in providing diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients with heart-related conditions. This position involves the use of high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) and other echocardiography testing equipment to produce images of the heart, aiding in the diagnosis of heart conditions. The role requires specialized knowledge in cardiac imaging and thorough experience in performing echocardiograms and related cardiovascular evaluations.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Perform non-invasive procedures to examine heart valves, chambers, and blood vessels to produce echocardiograms (ECGs).
- Conduct imaging and non-imaging cardiovascular evaluations, including exercise tolerance tests, Holter monitoring, event recorders, electrocardiograms, stress tests, and transesophageal echocardiography.
- Obtain patient history, explain procedures to patients, address their concerns, and ensure adherence to pre-screening policies and procedures.
- Determine appropriate methodology and techniques for each procedure, including arranging immobilization and/or support devices for proper patient positioning.
- Prepare patients for echocardiography procedures, position them appropriately, and assist them after the procedure is completed.
- Exercise judgment in determining if the procedure is sufficient for accurate diagnoses or if additional imaging is needed.
- Provide images, data analysis, and patient information to the physician for diagnostic interpretation.
- Prepare facilities for procedures in accordance with procedural requirements, including calibrating equipment.
- Monitor the patient's physical condition throughout the procedure and promptly report any changes in the patient's status to the clinical staff, supervisor, and/or cardiologist.
- Recognize abnormal rhythms and immediately notify the physician or appropriate clinical staff.
- Maintain accurate patient documentation, including computerized records.
- Perform general office duties such as maintaining stock supplies, assisting in supply inventory management, recording procedure codes for billing, and scheduling patients.
- Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies, promoting workplace safety and continuous improvement practices.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and document malfunctions, escalating concerns to the appropriate personnel, including engineers, supervisors, or cardiologists.
- Perform all duties within the scope of education, knowledge, and according to Novant Health's policies and procedures, as well as state and federal guidelines.
Education and Experience
- Education: High School Diploma/GED and completion of an Associate's degree in Cardiovascular Technology, or graduation from an accredited school of Ultrasonography.
- Experience: A minimum of one year of echocardiography experience, with at least two years of experience in an echo clinic setting preferred. Prior experience in thoracic echocardiography is required, and experience with Aurora systems is preferred.
Certifications and Licenses
- Certification: Registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS).
- Licensing: Current state certification, licensure, or eligibility for licensure in applicable states.
- CPR Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Additional Skills and Requirements
- Ability to work independently and effectively communicate with patients, physicians, and clinical staff.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce high-quality images for diagnostic use.
- Skilled in using echocardiography equipment and troubleshooting technical issues.
- Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and pathophysiology.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in medical practice.
