Job Description

Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing support functions of the Laboratory, including but not limited to: Core Laboratory, Point of Care, Transfusion Services, Microbiology, and/or Quality/LIS. Will plan, direct, coordinate, implement, evaluate and improve in a most cost effective manner the processes associated with the operations within this area of the clinical laboratory. This position will provide technical expertise for the oversight of proficiency testing, quality performance, laboratory testing and all accreditation requirements. Will provide oversight of staff education, to include staff competency and skill development. Provides technical guidance to the staff, in the absence of the department director. Must have the ability to act independently, with strong organization and critical thinking skills. Maintains necessary documentation and records as required for staffing, competency, training and assessments. Must be technically proficient in the maintenance, operation, quality control and troubleshooting of all laboratory instruments in which the team member was trained and demonstrates competency. Ensures all regulatory requirements are met as part of standard operating procedures.

Qualifications

Education: 

BS in Medical Technology or related degree (degree must in a field that is considered eligible for certification) required. Bachelor's Degree from an approved college or university and/or graduate of an accredited school of medical technology, or equivalent such as military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489, or have qualified at the Medical Technologist level by achieving a satisfactory grade on a HHS examination prior to 2/28/92 42 CFR 493.1491. The above meets required criteria as defined by CLIA regulations for High Complexity testing (42 CFR 493.1489 January 24, 2003).

Registered with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, NCA AMT or CSMLS).

      
Experience: 

Five (5) years of previous clinical laboratory experience required. Leadership and/or quality management experience is preferred.

 

Skills Required:

  • Analytical ability to interpret and analyze test results within a laboratory general setting staff member has received training and demonstrated required competency– this includes but is not limited to: Blood Bank/Transfusion Services; Chemistry; Coagulation; Hematology; Microbiology (full or limited scope); Serology; and Toxicology.
  • Interpersonal skills in order to work effectively with all personnel of lab/hospital.
  • Manual dexterity, physical health, and visual acuity to operate various types of laboratory equipment, and handle/test/trouble shoot/problem solve laboratory specimen testing.
