Position Summary
The Pharmacy Technician supports optimal patient care by working collaboratively within the healthcare team. Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist, the technician assists in the preparation, distribution, and administration of medications across various settings, including acute care, oncology, and specialty pharmacy.

Essential Job Functions
General Responsibilities
• Fill and deliver medication orders for patients of all age groups
• Perform non-sterile and sterile compounding (including hazardous drug prep in oncology)
• Replenish automated dispensing machines, crash carts, and emergency kits
• Document and label accurately in EMRs and other systems
• Use pharmacy equipment and software proficiently
• Answer and screen phone calls, escalating to pharmacist when appropriate
• Assist with training and orientation of new team members
Setting-Specific Functions
Acute Care
• Perform medication distribution
• Support medication histories and inventory tasks
• Support IV preparation and verification (if validated)
Oncology Pharmacy
• Compound and deliver hazardous/non-hazardous sterile admixtures
• Maintain regulatory compliance for USP 797/800, BOP, DEA, DHHS
Specialty Pharmacy
• Fill, prepare, and ship specialty medications
• Use point-of-sale systems and coordinate with patients
• Manage tracking and delivery to ensure timely service

Minimum Qualifications
Education
• High School Diploma or GED – Required
• Associate Degree – Preferred (required for certain validating duties)
Experience
• Must meet at least one of the following:
• Acute Care: Experience in three pharmacy skills (e.g., medication distribution, sterile compounding, medication listing, controlled substance accountability, privileged ADS, validating duties, procurement)
• Outpatient Oncology: Experience in three pharmacy skills OR 2 years in acute care/oncology + certification + proficiency in a third skill
• Specialty Pharmacy: 4 years in any pharmacy setting OR 2 years in a specialty pharmacy setting
• In lieu of 4 years, may accept 2 years in sterile compounding (IV/chemo).
Licensure/Certification
• Current registration with State Board of Pharmacy – Required
• PTCB or NHA Certification – Required within 60 days of hire
• OR enrollment in pharmacy school with NCBOP intern license
• OR active FPGEE/FPGEC status
Additional Requirements
• Two specialized pharmacy technician certifications from PTCB, BPTS, or NPTA
• OR one additional certification for Validating Techs (NC only)
• Proficiency in basic math, communication, and computer skills (MS Word, Outlook, EMRs)
• Ability to travel or drive to multiple locations as needed
Preferred Qualifications
• Nephrology certification
• Familiarity with medication names (trade/generic), dosage, routes of administration, adverse effects
• Experience with inventory and medication management
